What Is ECO Mode In Your Car And When You Should and Shouldn’t Use It

Driving modes in cars are a feature that allows drivers to tailor their vehicle's performance to different situations and preferences. By adjusting parameters like throttle response, transmission shifts, and suspension settings, these modes provide a customized driving experience. Some cars come with simple driving modes such as Eco, Sports, or Normal mode only, but some have up to 7 driving modes such as Jaecoo J7.

As vehicles become more advanced, the range of options available continues to expand, catering to a wide array of driving styles and needs. Driving mode such as Eco mode which is common in modern cars represents a thoughtful approach to driving, emphasizing a balance between performance and environmental consciousness to improve fuel efficiency.

So, what does Eco mode do, and how does it work?

The eco mode in cars is designed to enhance fuel economy, which benefits both your wallet and the environment by reducing fuel consumption and emissions released into the air.

It also reduces throttle response, meaning that the car accelerates more gradually, regardless of how hard you press the pedal. This adjustment helps conserve fuel by encouraging a more economical driving style.

Secondly, it alters the transmission mapping to prioritise efficiency over performance. In Eco mode, the vehicle shifts gears less aggressively, keeping engine RPMs lower to save fuel. You might notice a difference in engine sound as the car shifts at lower revs.

Additionally, Eco mode can adjust the functioning of auxiliary systems like air conditioning and electrical components. For instance, the air conditioning system might run less frequently or at a lower intensity, allowing the cabin temperature to fluctuate slightly rather than maintaining a constant cool environment. This reduces the load on the engine, further contributing to fuel savings.

When you should and shouldn’t use ECO Mode when driving?

“Use when you’re relax, avoid when you’re in a rush”

It is advised to use Eco Mode when you are driving at a slower pace approximately under 80 km/h.  It is also ideal for daily use in situations where you'll drive slowly, when you are getting around, driving in high traffic areas, or travelling on city streets with typically low-speed restrictions.

However,  if you are planning to accelerate your car quickly like driving on a highway, it is not suggested for you to turn this mode on as it reduces the car response time. In certain situations, such as when driving on a highway, merging into traffic, on bumpy roads, or in bad weather.

Reducing the frequency of gear changes is another effect of using Eco mode in a vehicle. When shifting between gears is necessary, such as going for a Genting Highland hill climb, travelling on a twisting kampung road, or going through an off-roading journey, it is better to have full control over your vehicle acceleration and traction. Therefore, in these situations using Eco Mode is not advised.

But still, if you are planning to use Eco Mode at all times won't be a problem at all. By doing so will not damage your car, however you’ll have a lack of power output from your car that you’ll need at certain times when you are driving.
