Stay 'AwAS' With The New Speed Camera From JPJ!
After more than a decade, the speed trap cameras introduced by JPJ late back in 2013 finally gets an update. The all new more technologically advanced camera 'Automated Awareness Safety System' (AwAS) has just been revealed and installed recently. According to the JPJ, the replacement Redflex model cameras were replaced primarily due to significant damage and a lack of support from the previous camera’s manufacturer.
In a statement by the JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli, he mentioned that the replacement of the AwAS cameras aligns with the enhancement of the current system. Incorporating the latest technological advancements available such as 'Automated Number Plate Recognition' (ANPR) technology to ensure improved camera performance.
The AwAS cameras have been set up in several areas (JPJ’s Photo)
Design wise, the new AwAS camera looks like an ordinary pole. Slimmer and slightly shorter in length then the outgoing model, it is also coloured in black giving it a more sophisticated and clean looking look, average to the human eye, a little more difficult to spot when one is driving.
The main purpose of the AwAS cameras' function is to enforce the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333)'s prohibitions on speeding and running red lights. This is to ensure that the number of collisions and fatalities resulting from irresponsible drivers could be significantly reduced. The replacement of the new camera will be done in phases by the JPJ starting this year, road users beware.
